Choke on the Stratus Subaru EA-81

Actually, the choke on the Bing carb is not a choke at all but is an enricher. So when I keep saying CHOKE in the following text, remember it is not a traditional butterfly valve choke. This is the same way Harley-Davidson does it on their carbureted engines.

Made a bracket (forgot what thickness material) and mounted it to the left side throttle bell crank bearing. I formed the choke cable bracket to fit the line of the choke cables more directly. I drilled the choke bracket out to accommodate two adjustable cables stops. Decided to make a clamp assembly instead of using a nicopress to secure the three choke cables together (one from the choke knob and two from the chokes). That way I can remove the choke cable if need be. The clamp was  made by drilling a hole through an AN4 bolt for the cables. By using two washers and a nylon locknut, I can tighten then clamp to secure all three cables together in a similar way that the carburetor throttle cables are held secure.

I decided  to stiffen the choke bracket by adding a piece of  “L”  from the choke bracket to the upper firewall stiffener. Installed the choke knob / cable assembly by drilling  a hole in the panel. I also drilled a hole in the firewall to accommodate a cable adjuster for the choke cable to the panel.   The only thing I noticed was that since the chokes are spring loaded at the carburetors, you have to keep the choke knob pulled out manually or it will return to closed position. This has not been a problem so far and actually prevents you from inadvertently leaving the choke on. As you can see in the photos, the choke cables make a very gentle bend to the carbs. This allows the cable to be very easy and smooth to operate unlike the ZAC version that has sharp bends and is difficult to pull and operate.

I tried to find the original drawing that Brent Battles had sent to me that showed this arrangement but I could not. If I come across it I will post it here as it had some very good information about material size, angles, etc. If Brent sees this maybe he can send me the drawing again.
