HDS wing Fairings & Center Console by Fred Hulen

The following text and photos were supplied by Fred Hulen. As you can see from his work, Fred is what I consider a craftsman and not just a builder. He ordered the .025" fairings from ZAC.

Sebastian told me a long time ago that Zenith had given up on demo planes with "per plans" wing fairings. "They always get stepped on and ruined".   They are using .025 and some extra ribs, etc. My EAA councilor agreed with .025 so that's what I used.   Wellllll, I knew that making ribs to fit those tapering shapes exactly would be a big pain, so I used "L" stock (saved weight too) and ran them across the other way.  MUCH easier to build.  None on the bottom, just the top skin.  Knowing that the extreme rear edge would buckle if someone were to put a lot of weight there, and having the old .016 fairings left over, I cut the last inch and a half off the trailing edge of the original fairings and slipped them inside the rear of the new .025 fairings, giving that rear edge a much better chance of surviving.  As you can see from two pictures, it's pretty sturdy and not that much for weight.                     Fred
