Description:
Abstract:
This coverage shows property ownership for the Dungeness watershed on the northern Olympic Peninsula. It is a digitized version of the original township by township survey maps produced by the General Land Survey of the United States Government. The survey took place in 1858 with the map with property boundaries published in 1863. Townships covered in the 1858 survey included T31N, R3W and R4W; T30N, R3W and R4W. The original maps are stored at the Sandpoint Federal Archives, Seattle, WA.
Purpose:
The purpose of this coverage is to be a part of a time series of maps which show property ownership changes in the lower Dungeness watershed from 1863 to 1992.

For the 1858 survey maps on which this coverage is based the surveyors were required to first map the exterior boundaries of each six mile by six mile township, then to survey the interior lines for each square mile section. They also noted coastlines, meander lines of rivers, and the presence of dwellings, fences, and fields. In addition, they were required to make sufficient note of vegetation, soils, and topography.
