Helen Read's Big Honkin' Trip Report
Dave Con 2000
Part 3: After the Show

Here I am posing with the lovely and talented Maria Pope (center). That's me on the right, in the blue sweatshirt. On the left is Shirlee (Foxyscribe). I had just told Maria how much we love Campaign 2000.

They tape two Late Shows on Thursday. We went to the earlier show, which started at 4:30 pm (normally the show tapes at 5:30, but they have changed to an earlier schedule for the summer; it probably has something to do with Daylight Savings Time, and the earlier harvest in Canada). The second show (which aired Friday), would begin at 7:00 pm. During the hour and half between tapings, a lot of Late Show staff and crew were running in and out of the theater to go get something to eat or whatever.

We spent that time loitering outside the theater on 53rd Street, chatting and taking pictures with a lot of Late Show staffers. Many of them seemed to know about AFL, and if they didn't before, they do now. We especially hoped to get to see Mike McIntee (production assistant and Wahoo-boy) and Tony Mendez (cue card boy and star of the Tony Mendez Show). We (well, Traci, mostly) asked almost everyone that we talked to if Mike and Tony could come out and see us. Mike knew in advance that we, his loyal Wahoo readers, would be there that night.

The first person that we talked to was Maria Pope, executive producer and star of Campaign 2000. Someone (Shirlee?) commented to Maria that there was no Top Ten. Maria said that was because there was too much show. I commented that the Survivor castaway went really long (Maria agreed), and told her how much we love Campaign 2000. I was really happy to have the chance to tell her that in person. The other pictures that we got are big group pictures, but I somehow ended up with a fabulous closeup of me and Shirlee with Maria Pope. We had just come out of the theater at that point, and I still have my sweatshirt on in the picture.

Felicia came out, and someone told her that she just had to say hi to Brad. Brad came over and Felicia addressed him by name and gave him a big hug. Brad was dazzled by the curbside beauty of Felicia. We got a group shot with her.

Sid came out, clearly in a hurry, and didn't stop to talk. Someone remembered that there had been something we had wanted to ask Sid: is it "sacks and sacks" of letters, or "stacks and stacks"? Brad heroically chased Sid across the street, holding up his hand to stop traffic in a move much like Paul's "It's okay, I'm a celebrity" in the bit where Dave thinks the show is over and Paul has to go after him. We watched Brad approach Sid, walk along with him for a moment, and shake hands, before Sid continued on his way (Traci and Carl caught this on videotape). The word from Sid: "sacks and sacks".

It then became a quest to ask each band member that we saw about the sacks/stacks controversy. We got a group picture with band member Tom "Bones" Malone, who confirmed it is "sacks and sacks", but admitted that for years he thought it was "stacks and stacks". I guess he wouldn't necessarily know the words, since he would always be playing the trombone and not singing. Felicia also confirmed later (we saw her a second time, probably on her way back from somewhere) that it is "sacks and sacks", and so did Al Chez (Chesnowith).

Ah, Al Chez. Al knew a lot about AFL. He asked about Donz, and wanted to know "Who is Annette?". He also knew about "that guy who just left". (Timko!) He wondered why he hadn't read about the group trip. (We had been instructed not to mention it on AFL ahead of hand, because of the limited tickets. Traci sent out something like 40 e-mails to AFLers inviting them on the trip, but if it were posted on AFL prematurely she probably would have been bombarded with way more requests than she could have handled.) I told Al to read our trip reports when we get back.

We got a picture with Al, and pictures with Biff Henderson and Barbara Gaines (both of whom seemed really pressed for time, but were courteous and kind enough to pose for pictures). Oh, and a picture with Late Show "intern" Andrea.

Oh, and we saw Pat Farmer arranging splattered food on the sidewalk, which turned out to be for a Mailbag letter on Friday's show (the one where Dave buys his groceries online, and they are dropped down from outer space).

We continued to ask everyone we saw to send Mike McIntee and Tony Mendez out. We really wanted to see them, and had presents for them. (Maria Pope, Al Chez, and Felicia each got a button, and there were T-shirts for Mike and Tony.) Mike did not come out. We do and do and do for Mike, and this is the thanks we get? (I know, he probably had to type up blue cards for the later taping. Still, it would have been nice to meet him.) We finally saw Tony running back into the theater very close to the 7:00 taping; it was clear that he didn't have time to stop. (We also saw Paul returning to the theater as it approached 7:00. He didn't stop, but told us as he ran by that he didn't have time and had a show to do. Fair enough; it was getting late by then.)

Now here is the really cool part: a while after Al Chez went back into the theater, he came back out with Sid, and they just hung out and talked with us for quite a while. Sid passed out guitar picks with his name on them, and was given a Dave Con T-shirt (the buttons may have been gone by then). They were both very friendly and nice, and seemed to genuinely enjoy just hanging out with us. Someone asked about Will, and about Will's sub. Sid said that Will was in Japan, told us who the sub was (I don't recall the name), and that we might recognize him from Saturday Night Live. Al talked with us some more about AFL. Al says that whenever he wants to know something, he asks Donz; Sid, who has a "10 year old computer", gets his information from Al. Al asked us where we are all from (all over, by the way: Vermont, Kansas, California, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania were all represented, as well as the NY/NJ area). I somehow managed not to get a picture of Sid, but Libby e-mailed me one as I was writing this paragraph.

It was truly amazing to talk to all these people. They were friendly and nice, and really went above and beyond the call (Al and Sid especially). We never did get to talk to Mike McIntee or Tony Mendez, though. (But keep reading.)

After our time spent in "productive loitering", we walked over to the restaurant (Carmine's) where we had dinner reservations. We stopped first to pop into the CBS store; someone asked about Patty (the employee who recently told Dave on national TV that she doesn't like her job at the CBS Store). Patty wasn't there, and the guy who was didn't seem to be a very happy camper either. Brad, completely deadpan, asked him if they had any merchandise for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and several other shows on other networks, much to the store clerk's annoyance.

We had a lovely (huge) dinner at Carmine's, where we were joined by Donz5. It was so fun hanging out with people who know all the Dave jokes (there were, for example, a lot of "Like a loser" remarks throughout the evening). It was after 11:00 pm when the group finally broke up. Thanks Karen for organizing the dinner!

The next morning, Friday, I met up with Sally Drell at Lincoln Center. We were downstairs in the Concourse area, waiting for the 10:30 tour, when Sally spotted Tony Mendez walking by! Very matter of factly, she said something like "There goes Tony Mendez." Tony turned his head slightly then kept going--he was a good 15 or 20 feet past us by then--so I called out "TONY! WE WATCH THE TONY MENDEZ SHOW EVERY NIGHT!" to try to get his attention. This worked: he immediately turned around, smiling, and came right over to talk to us.

Tony shook my hand and chatted for a bit. He said he can't believe anybody actually watches the Tony Mendez Show. I assured him that I watch it all the time (actually, I think I kept lapsing into the royal 'we'), and told him that I especially enjoyed the one the other night (6/20/2000) when he dropped his trousers. This got a big reaction and "Shhhhhhh" from Tony. I told Tony I had been to the Thursday show with a large group of people from alt.fan.letterman, and that we had wanted to see him and Mike McIntee (and that we had T-shirts for them). At the mention of Mike McIntee, Tony said that he (Tony) has never read the Wahoo because he doesn't know how to work a computer.

I'm not sure what else was said, but at some point Tony asked my name, so I introduced myself and Sally properly. Sally asked him about his toe injury, and he explained that he had had to have an ingrown toenail removed, and that Dave keeps pretending he's going to step on it. He asked if we saw the show last night (Thursday), and I again said that we went to the Thursday taping. He said, oh, you saw Dave's show; he had meant the Tony Mendez Show. I explained that I (or probably the royal 'we' again) had missed it, because I was travelling and away from my computer.

[I didn't get to see Thursday's Tony Mendez Show until I got home on Sunday, and then I finally understood why he had asked if we had seen the show when Sally asked about the toe. Tony explained about the ingrown toenail on Thursday's Tony Mendez Show, so when I finally saw it, suddenly that part of the conversation with Tony made sense.]

At that point it was getting close to time for the tour--not to mention that Tony probably had to be somewhere--so I asked him if we could take a picture. "Sure, where should we take it, how about over there by the poster?" I was amazed that he wanted to take an extra second to pose someplace interesting, instead of just getting it over with. The tour was leaving, though, so Sally took a quick shot of me with Tony where we were. Tony shook my hand again, and we went our separate ways. It was a huge thrill to meet Tony, and he seemed like a really, really nice guy. (The picture turned out great, by the way. Well, page down and see for yourself.)

After the Lincoln Center tour, Sally and I went to the American Museum of Natural History & the Rose Space Center & Hayden Planetarium. I love this kind of thing, and had a blast, even though we did not see anyone connected with the Late Show :-). We saw beautiful lunar photos, space related exhibits, Earth exhibits (lava formations etc.), meteorites, minerals and gems, on and on and on, and la piece de la resistance, giant fossil skeletons of extinct mammals and dinosaurs! We met up with Mark Monroy and Royce for the 7:30 space show at the planetarium (very cool, narrated by Tom Hanks).

Saturday I went to the Museum of Modern Art (wonderful), then walked past a lot of huge stores on Fifth Avenue, and over to Rockefeller Center, where I hung out for a while watching tourists. After a quick nap at the hotel, it was off to Karen's for a "Dave Anon Meeting". This was mostly "For the Ladies", but Nick came a bit later, and Brad was invited but stood us up. Karen provided lovely refreshments (sandwiches etc. and some good junk food), and we watched videos of Dave. Oh, and I got to hear some AFLers sing--we had a birthday cake (my birthday was the next day, Sunday). Thanks for hosting such a great party Karen, and thanks for the cake Kathie!

We watched some great stuff from early Late Night (including stuff that I only vaguely remembered), some of Dave's guest appearances on Carson, and some game show appearances that he did in the late 1970s. Oh! and some tape of Dave doing the weather forecast in Indiana. One of the highlights of the evening was some tape of Dave's stint on Password Plus (hosted by the late Allen Ludden) in the '70s, where he wore a striped rugby shirt, white drawstring pants, and poofy blow-dried hair. (Dave was excellent on Password, by the way. He has a great vocabulary, and he's quick, so he was good at the game, and he interjected a lot of funny comments whenever he had a chance.) We also saw Dave guesting on Celebrity Cooks, and an unaired pilot from the same time period, of Dave hosting a game show called the Riddlers. Dave was great, the show sucked, 'nuf said.

I took a cab back to my hotel at 1:30 or so in the morning, then got up the next day (actually, the same day, come to think of it) and flew home. I had a most excellent adventure at the Dave Con 2000!

Here I am with cue card guy and star of the Tony Mendez Show, Tony Mendez. Can you tell I was nervous and excited to meet him? Tony smiled a lot while I talked to him, just not at the moment when Sally took the photo.

Lots More Pictures!
