Have YOU Seen the Oprah Log?

On November 8, 2001, David Letterman decided that he needed direction in his life, a goal to strive for. In an attempt to better himself, he would work toward the goal of appearing as a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show. For nearly three months, Dave tirelessly pursued his dream, each night recording his progress in the Oprah Log. There were many ups and downs along the way. At times Dave was discouraged. Day after day, his log entries read "Oprah did not call today," or "Did not hear from Oprah." Day 64 was a particularly low point. "I'm losing hope."

But then, just when things were at their bleakest, there were some rays of hope. Dave was endorsed by the Today Show, TV Guide, and People Magazine. "Oprah Call Dave" signs began appearing across the land. Websites urging Oprah to call Dave sprang up. Ricki Lake called. Jerry Springer called. Sally Jessy Raphaël called. Connie Chung and Maury Povitch called. Still, Oprah did not call. Dave did not hear from Oprah, would never hear from Oprah. Finally, on January 28, 2002, Dave gave up hope of ever appearing on the Oprah's show. He just wasn't good enough. You can sense the crushing pain of defeat in Dave's final, poignant entry in the Oprah Log.

Day 82. I don't want to be on your damn show.

Despite Dave's failure in his quest, he wanted to preserve the Oprah Log for posterity. Paul Shaffer sang the haunting and beautiful love theme It Ain't Oprah Till It's Oprah one last time, and the Oprah Log was placed on display in the lobby of the Ed Sullivan Theatre. Tragically, however, the display case was broken into just moments later, the Oprah Log stolen. It's unknown who stole the Oprah Log, or where they took it. The thieves may have gone into hiding for a while, but then they became overconfident and began to make mistakes. Since then, the Oprah Log has been sighted all across the United States, and it wouldn't surprise me if it turns up overseas. I've seen the Oprah Log myself, and had the presence of mind to take pictures. See for yourself.
