Graph 1
The height of the Dave Tree (green) in the year 2001. The height of the greenhouse tube (red) is 42.5 inches. The dashed line indicates planting day, September 22, 2001. Note the decline in height in the autumn (due to leaves falling off the tree).

Graph 2
The height of the Dave Tree (green) in the year 2002. The height of the greenhouse tube (red) is 42.5 inches. Note again the leaves falling off the tree in the autumn.

Graph 3
The height of the Dave Tree in the year 2003. The original (dead) tree is in black; new growth is in blue. The slight decrease in the dead tree height in May is due to the end buds crumbling and falling off.

Graph 4
Comparison of the Dave Tree's growth in 2002 (green) and 2003 (blue). From June 1 to August 1, 2003, the Dave Tree regrew from the ground up at an astonishing average rate of 19.5 inches per month. Compare this with the relatively tame average growth rate of 9 inches per month during the same time period in 2002. In other words, the Dave Tree is growing approximately twice as fast (notice that the growth curve is twice as steep) this summer as it did last summer, despite the setback of having to regrow essentially from scratch. As of August 8, 2003, the Dave Tree has already cleared the top of the 42.5" greenhouse tube, and has almost caught up to where it was last year, despite last year's three foot head start.
