BACKGROUND:
During the 1880's, the pleasure boating public found steam engines
manufactured by the Boston, Massachusetts firm of the Edward S. Clark Company reliable,
capable and economical in operation. Launch-style boats were gracefully powered by Clark
marine steam engines. The power requirements of industry were served with
Clark stationary steam engines.
We at the Pearl Engine Company recognized the design's continued appropriateness.
After careful measuring, blueprinting, pattern making and
founding, we are pleased to offer our Pearl Engines as kits or fully assembled. When
compared to the original Clark, the Pearl steam engines are faithful revivals of
an elegant and proven performer.
FEATURES:
The unique long wishbone-shaped connecting rod of typically twice the length of other
designs realizes decreased strain and friction. The result is increased efficiency and
longevity.
The inverted design places the heavier parts near the bottom. An
obvious advantage for marine users, but also a feature stationary power users find
significant.
All stuffing boxes and adjustments are accessible from the top of the engine. This allows
for easy and simple servicing.
The cored cylinder with its cast-in ports and smooth flowing steam passages raises efficiency.
Coring the cylinder also simplifies machining.
The Stephenson link allows for easy reversing as well as changing the point of cutoff.
Common to all Pearl engines is Stephenson link reversing, double acting steam pistons, piston valves, babbitted main bearings, bronze connecting rod bearings, one inch shafts and manual lubrication.
